10 day ago I said Id try to build 10 (shitty) products in 10 days. Thanks to the (real or imagined) social pressure from yall, Ive managed to (sort of) do it. Most of them were shitty, a few of them were (I think) pretty cool, and one made it to the front page of Product Hunt, beating out the Retina iMac, which is a pretty cool product. Anyway, for today, I decided to do something a little different — a data visualization. Its called 100 New Yorkers. (onehundrednewyorkers.appspot/) Each time you visit the page, it fetches 100 random New York City residents and their anonymous responses to the American Community Survey, and lets you plot variables against each other and explore the data. For example, in the screenshot, Ive plotted income on the x, age on the y, and shown icons next to each person indicating whether they have health insurance, and whether theyre US-born, naturalized, or non-citizens. Im planning on adding a map eventually, as well as some other variables, so you can do nifty things like visualize how people commute to work based on where they live, or plot educational attainment against income. Anyway, does anyone have a Google Inbox invite?
