***100 Great Films of the 1980s*** #68- Beetlejuice (1988, Tim Burton) Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Master of the occult Tim Burton had his first big smash with this horror comedy and 80s classic. Alec Baldwin & Geena Davis play a suburban couple, killed in a car accident and bound to an afterlife in their home. When a yuppie family move in, they call upon the expertise of demon, Beetlejuice, to scare them away. The humour is quite campy and cheesy in places and the special effects havent dated well. Tim Burtons unique style still makes the film worth a rewatch and the majority of the makeup effects are still very impressive. Michael Keaton steals the movie as the title character and Winona Ryder gives one of her best performances as the goth daughter of the pretentious family. The Banana Boat Song (Day-O) scene when the family break into song and dance around the dinner table is just classic. youtube/watch?v=xTaJWaDJlFk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
