100 Movies, Movie 12 - Blade Runner (1982) - Blade Runner is a masterpiece. Ridley Scott has managed to make quite a few truly wonderful sci-fi flicks (and quite a few stinkers), but none are like Blade Runner. The story of Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) and his mission to bring in or take out four replicants, androids hiding out on Earth, does so many things right it could fill a massive essay on its own. First off, nearly all sci-fi films since have taken visual inspiration directly from this movie. Neon lights, dark alleys, trench coats, haze, smoke, that all comes Scotts vision of a futuristic LA. Additionally, Blade Runner expands on the theme of its source material, Philip K Dicks Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, rather than dumb it down, something quite rare in novel-to-film adaptations. Blade Runner asks a question so ahead of its time that it still, over thirty years later, hasnt come to fruition. What defines life? Are androids people? Are clones? Sure, it hasnt come up yet, but it is a philosophical debate that will happen eventually, and it never hurts to be out in front of it. Blade Runner is exciting, thought-provoking, philosophical and in nearly every way extraordinary. See Also: Twelve Monkeys, Akira, A Scanner Darkly.
