100 yrs ago old Etonians with Victorian values were in charge of the class ridden British Army - now old Etonians run the Govt - plus ca change! Its worth listening to Radio Merseyside at 5pm today to hear the documentary on Lord Derby but will we get the truth or will it be sanitised revisionism - the Pals brigades were a catastrophe and he refused to sanction the removal of his mate General Haig in 1917 after the slaughter of the Somme & Passchendaele when Lloyd George wanted to sack him for his suicidal tactics. Derby threatened to resign as War Minister if Haig was removed which wouldve brought the coalition War Govt down so the carnage under Haig continued for another year! ps Lord Derby also asked Churchill to do something when the 1911 strikes brought the city to a halt with over 200,000 on strike for union recognition and better wages/conditions - Churchill sent gun boats to the Mersey and flooded the city with troops resulting in 2 people being shot dead on Vauxhall Rd.
