Fortunately, there are many proactive steps parents can take to help their young athletes play/swim to the best of their abilities. 27. Maintain realistic expectations about clutch performance. More and more, parents and coaches believe that in the heat of the competitive moment, a true athlete should be able to rise to the occasion and do whatever it takes to win, especially during the win or lose – or what is commonly called a “clutch” moment in sports. • Clutch performance is a lot to ask from any athlete, let alone a young swimmer. • Professional athletes who perform flawlessly, the ones who can always pull it out “in a clutch” are indeed grown professionals, but they are actually quite rare. • Parents need to remember that sports can be physically and emotionally demanding for kids. • Sports parents tend to focus on the physical and they forget, or simply don’t understand how much of sports is actually mental. • Children of parents who keep their performance expectations realistic are often better able to enjoy sports and not get burned out early from too much pressure.
