102 Players in Action for the Youth This weekend saw Rathfriland FC Youth field over 100 players in competitive matches for the first time ever. This milestone was achieved with 9 teams fielding from U7 to U16 level. The result of the day was probably the U10s thrilling 3 – 3 draw with Warrenpoint Town at the Abbey Grammar in Newry with keeper Ronan Burns the hero, saving a penalty in the dying seconds of the game. The U13s also were involved in a thriller on Ingram Park drawing 5 -5 with Lurgan Town thanks to goals from Brooke Chambers, Cormac McElroy, Adam Bronte and Joshua Ingram. The biggest win of the day came in the U8 section with William Walsh’s charges running up a double figure score against Annalong Rovers thanks to a dazzling display from Eoghan Travers and his team mates. The U7s put in a great display but lost narrowly to Valley Rangers 4 – 3. The U16s travelled to Craigavon City and despite a long range goal from Ben Clydesdale lost agonisingly 2 – 1. In the three Friday night games the U11 Swifts donned their new kits, kindly sponsored by local businessman Philip Moorhead of 3 Interiors, and put in a fine performance against a very strong Camlough Rovers team only to be edged out 3 – 2 despite goals from Thomas Ingram and Ben Johnston. Meanwhile the newly formed U11 Colt’s first game of the season was against Oxford Sunnyside from Lurgan. Even though some of the players had never even met before the game, they put in a great team display with Jordan Magowan finishing off an amazing passing move involving Scott Chambers, Joey O’Hare and Patrick Cowan in a very creditable 3 – 1 defeat. The U15s played one of the league favourites Lisdrum Youth under the lights at Cheney Park and found the Newry lads pace and fire power hard to cope with going down 5 – 0. All in all this was another successful weekend for the club with all the 100+ players enjoying the games and the craic.
