10234:)林栢壽 About Doll Festival (hina matsuri) Speaking in March to be sure to mention the most representative and girls belonging ------ Doll Festival The Girls Festival Held on March 3, Girl‘s Festival features a display of dolls representing the imperial court displayed on a platform with the emperor and empress at the top and lower ranked attendants(隨從) or entertainers(藝妓) below. A meal with special foods and candies is also prepared for the occasion(重大盛會). The modern festival gained popularity in all classes during the Edo period (江戶時代)and like most customs in that period, became increasingly ornate(華麗的) and expensive, especially in the hands of the merchant class(商人的階層). The original doll display was quite simple, but gradually(逐漸) more tiers(層) were added, more figures were added and more miniature(微型) items (musical instruments and household furniture(傢俱) were also included. The doll set is often purchased(購買) for a daughter in the first year or so after birth and she takes the set with her upon marriage，perhaps for her daughter to use. Origins of the festival go back to Chinese purification(純化) rituals(儀式) which took place(出生) in the third month as well as to a type of poetry meeting in the Heian period(平安時代) (794-1185). Heian nobles(貴族) would sit alongside a stream running through a garden and cups of wine(葡萄酒), or a wine flask(長頸瓶) in a small boat would be launched(推出). Each poet in turn would have a sip(啜), recite(誦) a complete poem and send the boat along to its next stop. This activity was one based on Chinese models and reflected Chinese influence on Japan. A third origin was in a purification(純化)practice in which paper images (dolls) were cast(投) into the ocean or a stream. Unlike Children‘s Day (which corresponds(對應) with the old boys festival), the girls festival is not a national holiday.
