Australia’s trade minister Andrew Robb visited Korea and presented detailed impacts of the KAFTA and bilateral cooperation for the future during his interview with WOW TV. Our staff reporter Shin In-kyu has met him. Q. What is the current status of the KAFTA in Australia and why is it important to rectify the KAFTA within this year? The Australian Parliament rectified the KAFTA with 95 per cent of votes supporting it on 1 October. What is significant is tariffs will be reduced as soon as the KAFTA enters into force and there will be further tariff cuts each January upon agreement. When the KAFTA is rectified within this year, we can benefit from tariff reduction twice in a short period.” Q. Which industries of Korea will benefit from the KAFTA once it enters into force? Korean automobiles are very popular in Australia. When the KAFTA enters into force, Korean cars can add competitive edges compared to automakers from other countries. Australia is currently carrying out projects to expand its social infrastructure that converge infrastructure like roads, tunnels, railroads and ports with telecommunication. This is the largest ever of this kind, requiring AUD 125 billion. When the KAFTA enters into force, I expect Korea to have the advantage over other countries in this area.” Q. There has been much criticism that the KAFTA would seriously hurt Korea’s agriculture and dairy industries? Negotiations for agricultural matters are always difficult. To minimize negative effects, we have installed a long grace period in the KAFTA. It is noteworthy that Australia and Korea are counter-seasonal—when it is winter in Korea, it is summer in Australia. It is mutually complementary trading is available in agriculture.” Q. Given that Australia is strong in finance and legal services, what kind of impact will the KAFTA have on Korea? 80 per cent of Australia’s economy comprises services sectors, which are highly advanced. I believe finance, legal and medical services will enter the Korean market to have mutually complementary effects.” -Resource: WOW Korea Economic Daily TV, 6 October
