11/10/fourteen. The tax on yesterdays first sale was $6.66. Its going to be one of those days, Kulk thought. It was, in a good way. Lots of traffic. And afterward, at the gym, Kulk posted the fastest time on one of the Expresso bike courses -- 2.9 miles in 7 minutes. Indeed, the new machines at Anytime Fitness, with their array of interactive courses, make you sweat something fierce. Back to yesterday. The first minutes after High Noon provided a few priceless exchanges with Marie and Barry from Glostenbury Conn, and Richard and Rachel from Wilmington Vermont by way of East Hartford Conn. Theyre beautiful -- and complicated, Barry said as he and wifey eyeballed the blown-glass sculptures from Corning New York. She read the bio. Hes a master glassblower and I can see why. Richard and Rachel walked in. Daddy-Daughter Day. Marie found a mug she loved from the Callaradee potter and toted it around. Rachel took hold of the ostentatious pirate mugs made by the same potter, who has a unique sense of humor. WHOA! Rachel gasped. That is the king of weird! I like this one, Marie said showing Rachel the maroon-black beauty, but I certainly dont like that. Moments later, Marie continued, But youve gotta have something kooky every now and then, you know? Kulk enjoyed the May-December interaction. Marie also bought a 4-set of bird print coasters. Richard bought Princess the blue floral fused-heart glass that you may have seen in last nights post. Later, Jennifer from New Hampshire bought a framed DeAmicis litho-print featuring nature and a quote by John Muir: When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world. Interestingly, the correct quote is When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe. Not like it would have swayed Jennifer, who works for the U.S. Forest Service. I like the illustration and love the saying. Working for the forest service, its true: everything is connected. Speaking of trees and forests, Linda from Redwood Shores California arrived late in the day, though dont be fooled by the Redwood part because Redwood Shores sits on the west bank of San Pablo Bay, halfway between San Fran and San Jose. For those who love geography, the forests of NorCal are 3+ hours east of Redwood Shores. So there you have it. Lindas a piano camper at Pollys piano camp in Old B. Shes played piano since the age of 7 and has come back to the piano mansion every year since 2001 because its wonderful. Thats cliché, Kulk said. WHY is it wonderful? Because you get to play piano for 4 and a half hours a day, and theyre wonderful lessons, and you get to eat gourmet food, and you get Thai massages, and get to hang out with some great people ... and, of course, because of Polly. Whys she such a good teacher? She has a very intuitive sense of what the student needs to learn and knows how to communicate that effectively no matter what level theyre at. Linda will practice Bach and Haydn and Frédéric Chopin and Prokofiev for the next 8 days. What about modern pianists, Kulk asked. Billy Joel, you like him? Well, Billy Joel is the Piano Man, she said, but he hasnt done much in the last 30 years. Axl Rose? No. Lady Gaga? No. Fiona Apple? Shes great. Dark, but great. Fiona has talent, Linda said, but No. She bought 2 pair of fused-glass earrings from Kulks hometown of Long Beach California, which is 388 miles south of Redwood Shores. Shes giving one pair to a friend and keeping the other pair ... but doesnt know which person gets which pair. Theyre just cool, Linda said. I like the way the light bounces off of them, and I like the patterns. Kulk called it quits 15 minutes later and went for a pedal. Not only was the 7-minute 2.9-miler tops at Anytime Fitness, it ranked 421st out of 3,653 globally. Oh, before we forget, a fellow by the name of George Sava from Gotham began the day with the sale that produced the $6.66 tax. In keeping with the glass theme, the photographer bought 2 dichroic glass bracelets for a couple of girlfriends and in keeping with the Callaradee potter he bought a man-pirate mug because its cool and its big yet not ostentatious.
