11/22/2013 Friday, from news services in Orlando Sentinel: Study: Chemicals in plastics liked to early term births Chemicals called phthalates, found in plastics and cosmetics, may be liked to a raised risk of babies being born early, says a new study. Researchers found that women who delivered babies before 37 weeks gestation had higher levels of phthalates in their urine compared with women who delivered their children at full term. For the study, published in JAMA Pediatrics and led by John Meeker researchers used data from a study conducted at Brigham ad Womens Hospital in Boston fro 20067 to 2008. During the study, pregnant women were asked to fill out surveys and provide urine samples throughout their pregnancies. The researchers compared 130 mothers who delivered their babies before 37 weeks with 352 women who delivered their babies at term. They looked for break-down products of a phthalate known as DEHP. Overall, the two by-products, MEHP and MECPP, were more abundant in women who delivered their children early, compared with women who delivered after 37 weeks. That was also true for MBP, a byproduct of dibutyl phthalate. - One more reason why I never prepare foods using plastics or Teflon. nuf said. -
