11 Countries with their Old Names • Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon until 1972 and the old name was given to them by Portuguese and British. • Bechuanaland was the old name of Botswana until its independence from the British Empire in 1966. • Cambodia‘s old name was Kampuchea and it changed into its current name i.e. Cambodia in 1993. • Zaire was an African country that existed from 1971 to 1997, currently it is known as Congo. • French Somaliland was a French territory till 1967. After its independence fro France, it was named as Djibouti. • Ghana was known as Gold Coast until ins independence from the British in 1957. • Indonesia was a Dutch colony from 1800 till 1945 and it was known as Dutch East Indies. • Basutoland was the old name of Lesotho until its independence from United Kingdom in 1966. • Thailand was known as Siam until 1949. • Northern Rhodesia was a central southern African territory from 1911 till 1964. Upon its independence in 1964, it was named as Zambia. • Zimbabwe had taken its current name in 1980, before this period it was named as Rhodesia. Originally it was Southern Rhodesia which was changed to Rhodesia after its independence from British.
