#11 Daily Tao: #Patience Patience is one of the highest and most valuable virtues. It is the starting block, the foundation through which the myriad ways appear. Without it we do not know the value of gain and your options are limited. When we are patient your timing is immaculate. Like the snake, we strike only when the time is right. Like the heron fishing, only patience and timing finds his meal. The snake and heron survive because their patience allows stillness, and only through stillness are they effective. Without patience we expend energy uselessly. Without it we are in a fog, like murky water, we cannot see through until it settles. With patience, we allow the murk to settle creating a clear path for our actions. If we thrash about aimlessly, we may end up where we wanted to be by accident, but we have created more fog along the way and our results cannot be followed. If our results cannot be followed they are not true gains. An impatient mind is chaotic and unreliable, only when we have cultivated patience will we possess the clarity to perform deliberately. Only through deliberate action can we begin to cultivate balance. Without patience we will never see clearly the path that has always been there. When we possess patience and stillness we allow our opponent to make their own mistakes. We select the appropriate timing and therefore easily control any situation. When we strike we move with deliberate precision. Cultivate the art of patience. Apply discipline to your thoughts. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, and a rational outlook, when you possess these virtues you are successful. ~RW “Patience is power. Patience is not an absence of action; rather it is timing it waits on the right time to act, for the right principles and in the right way.” ― Fulton J. Sheen
