#11 The Animals Inside Looking Out (1966) In addition to some by The Partridge Family and The Osmonds, the first albums I owned were by Grand Funk Railroad. My mom had their first, On Time and the double Live Album. I dont remember exactly, but have always assumed that she didnt like them so she passed them onto me. I didnt really know what to think of them (I was maybe 6). A couple of years later, after I had started listening to the Stones, Led Zeppelin and Alice Cooper, GFR made more sense to me. I really loved the Live Album, and was really taken by the 12-minute plus version of Inside Looking Out. The dynamics of their arrangement were thrilling. Well, then my dad tells me You know they didnt write that. He pulls out Animalization by The Animals and tells me to check it out. Of course I was a total freak about the Stones and The Animals were a very similar sounding and looking (60s British Invasion) band to me. I loved the album and especially the song. He ended up giving me his record (it was pretty beat-up). It wasnt until many years later, when I got a 45 of it and saw Der. from Rosie and a songwriting credit to John and Alan Lomax, that I realized The Animals adapted it from an old prison work song. As I approach my Top 10, one thing this song has in common with many of the others on the list, was how I almost instantly memorized the lyrics and have never forgotten them. Did I fully understand a song about a guy in prison yearning to be with his love? About as much as I did about being in school waiting for 3 oclock to roll around. I got stripes.
