11 of the weirdest bootleg DVD covers: True Detective, Batman Begins Published Oct 18 2014, 4:30am EDT | By Emma Dibdin Translating movies and television for international markets can be a tricky business, as we discovered last year when we assembled this collection of 20 titles that got lost in translation. But if you want to descend to a whole new level of weirdness, you need to look beyond the official channels. Whether its a pirated disc being hawked in the street or a bona fide copy resold in unofficial packaging, these are products where the normal quality standards simply do not apply. Below weve rounded up 11 of the worlds most bizarre bootleg DVD covers, featuring dodgy Photoshopping, garbled Babelfish-style synopses, and entire actors being accidentally dropped in from other movies or TV shows. 2. Lost in Translation An intriguing conundrum. It says. Theres a photo of Scarlett Johansson looking wistful, which definitely comes from that film. So far, so good. But then you have a very large image of Dustin Hoffman in a top hat, with no Bill Murray in sight, and theres just no getting around the fact that neither Hoffman or his hat are in Lost in Translation. We also dont remember Johnny Depps JM Barrie cropping up in the Sofia Coppola drama, or indeed in any film at all other than Finding Neverland. Yet there he is, sitting on a bench with Freddie Highmore and a dog. Twice. Go home, DVD cover, youre drunk. 7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Misplaced critic quotes are a pretty common phenomenon on bootleg DVDs, but this ones so damning that we suspect whoever designed this cover was just having a bad day. Whats most brilliant about this is that the quote is positioned like a thought bubble, as though Jim Carrey is looking up at himself and Kate Winslet, thinking Yep….
