12:15 AM: Rex is whining downstairs. Go down to see whats wrong, nothing seems to be wrong except he seems restless. 12:35 AM: Rex is complaining loudly, almost barking. Whining with the same pitch and tone each time, indicating that he is generally upset rather than attempting to stand up or in pain. Go down and comfort him. 1:00 AM: More whining, now it sounds like hes trying to get up. help him up, watch him wander around then settle in the other room. 1:30 AM: More loud complaining, no obvious cause for it, hes just generally unhappy about something. I decide to lie down next to him on his bed for a while, and then I go to sleep on the couch next to him, with my hand within reach of his nose. He is quiet for the rest of the night. Rex doesnt ever just complain for no reason, even if I dont know what the reason is. He wanted me down there next to him, Im not sure why. Maybe he was feeling vulnerable, or maybe its something else, something we cant detect. Whatever it is, being near us seems to help. Rex had very bad separation anxiety when I first adopted him. He used to be beside himself with anxiety when I left the house, but we worked very hard together to get him over it and from that point on hes been fine when I leave the house. But when he does what hes doing now, it reminds me of his initial anxiety. It could be just a temporary feeling of loneliness, which isnt too bad, thats easy to fix. And hopefully hell be over it tomorrow.
