12/8/14: 700am EST A winter storm will impact the region through mid-week with heavy snow possible from the Anthracite Coal Region north and east into the Endless Mountains and Poconos. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for these areas with 6 inches or more of snow possible. Maximum potential accumulations could be over 1 foot on the highest mountain/ridge tops. The snow will be on the wet side and may lead to some power outages. As the storm strengthens on Tuesday, wind gusts from the north could be as high as 35-40 mph. Those who live in the Watch area (Northeast PA) should Be Prepared for dangerous travel conditions and significant disruptions to normal daily activities. Outside of the Watch area, light to moderate (measurable to plow-able) snow accumulations are likely as the storm moves slowly north from just off the Delmarva coast into New England. A little freezing rain or mixed precipitation at the start of the event, along with multiple rain/snow transitions in some areas will result in a messy period from late tonight through Wednesday. Those who live outside of the Watch area should Be Aware and plan for some minor inconveniences due to winter weather conditions. Overall, confidence is above average or better than 50/50 - but this is a somewhat volatile forecast with a number of factors (like elevation dependency) that could lead to some local boom or bust scenarios. We should have a solid handle on the forecast by this afternoon when additional headline products may be issued.
