#1289 My biggest worry with regard to the petition: To make it so that no student received lower than a C this semester would surely make the news, and be attacked by people all over the internet. Oberlin is a favorite target of a lot of people for things like cancelling class in March 2013, trigger warnings, etc. So naturally word would get around to various institutions, especially academic ones. I know that most employers do not care about GPA, and so dont look at grades. But Im worried that a decision like this would give employers or graduate schools who DO care about grades an easy reason to dismiss an applicant who got a C this semester--for all they know, that person didnt even turn in their final paper/project or attend the final exam. If I understand the goal of the petition correctly, students would receive an A, B, or C (+s and -s not included) --some institution or employer looking at the grades in the future for whatever reason would instead see the options as A, B, or C--OR WORSE. Whether or not this situation is fair (its not), I think that there is no way that the administration is going to let that^^^ happen. Theres surely some sort of certification that Oberlin has as an academic institution that students do not know about (since they dont need to) which makes Obies grades valid to parties who are interested in them, and accepting the terms of the petition would likely invalidate that certification.
