12th. KIDNEY TRANSPLANT ANNIVERSARY Today I celebrate my twelfth anniversary of liberation from DIALYSIS! Actually it feels more like a birthday. Since I received that gift, from an anonymus donor, to whom I am forever grateful for, I have become a different person. I wrote a letter of gratitude, at the hospital they promised it would reach the family of the donor. For starters I have learned the meaning of humility. Most important too, I came to recognize my mortality. We are here for a very short period of time, so lets make the best of it! Summing it up, even though I am not a religious person, I believe I had an epiphany, that day July third 2002, when dr. Hader stepped into my room at the LUMC, (Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum), and said to me, ¨mr. Friedman, you do not need to do dialysis anymore¨! Since then it has been a roller-coaster ride, with its ups and downs. Having to live with the side effects of the anti rejection medicines, the Prednison has made me gain weight, (grossly, I must say), the Tacrolimus has given me Diabetes, YUCK! there was the Cell-Cept, responsible for two heart attacks, luckily they took that one out of the repertoire! So, it has been an eventful last twelve years, Waiting to see what the next twelve will be like, namely I made a promise to a little baby girl, my nephew Arnon, and his lovely wife Liat, their daughter Illy, that I would be around for quite a while, to be her crazy great-uncle from Holland. Thats a promise I intend to keep!
