13 years ago I stood in the hallway at work and watched as the first WTC tower was on fire and a jet hit the second tower. If you grew up in Midland you probably heard the stories about bombs pointed at Dow Chemical, we had been told over the years if war ever came Dow would be a target. I went back to my desk wondering how many planes they had in the air and if any were headed in our direction. As the news came in about the Pentagon and the crash in the field, we still worried if there were more. When I left work that night I needed gas but the lines for the gas stations were out onto the roads. I stubbornly decided not to stop, refusing to feed the frenzy... but when I got home Rich said Did you get gas? Ellis is completely out of gas and the gas on corner jumped from $1.60 to $3.20. Ive already filled up the truck and some gas cans. He took my car down to fill it up. I went to the basement and got out every 4th of July decoration I could find and the kids and I put them out in the yard. We were preparing for war in my household. Later watching the coverage and all of the debris falling from the buildings, knowing some of the debris was people jumping and falling, was overwhelming. Ill never forget, nor will I let todays popular opinion cloud the reality of what was going on politically in the world prior to 9/11 and thereafter.
