13 years ago today I sat in Mrs. Elliotts 7th grade history class at Hankins Middle School and watched those horrific events unfurle. I, in my entire life, have never been as scared as I was that day. Our nation, my nation came under attack and suffered one of, if not the most devastating events in our history. Although the shock sent us into an intense state of grief, of which I had never seen or experienced before, it also sent us into an intense state of patriotism, kindness, love, and appreciation for one another. As a young person, I had only learned about patriotism in school, but in the days and months and even years after that tragic day, I as an American truly learned what it was like to BE an American. To have pride in my country and to truly appreciate the men and women who sacrifice so much to make sure this will never happen again. To our military service men and women to the firefighters, police and other first responders who ran into the darkness when all others wouldnt or couldnt, I sincerely express my undying appreciation and gratitude. Because of you I can do what it is that I do every day, which is to live in this great nation, free and unafraid. Thank You.
