13 years ago today, I underwent life-changing spinal surgery. I went from being visibly deformed from idiopathic scoliosis to having a rod, hooks, wires and screws fused into my spine. The surgery took 6+ hours and I now have a 16.5 inch scar to show for it. I learned how to rollover, sit-up and walk unassisted all over again, at the age of 17. I also learned what patience, determination and discipline can get you in moments of self-pity. The surgery saved my life; it taught me a few hard lessons; it relieved me of pain from simply breathing; and drove me, and continues to drive me, to be the active person I am today! I am thankful for all that I have overcome and blessed to have the support system that continues to surround me!
