13 years is a long time. It sounds incredibly cliché but I can honestly remember it like it was yesterday. If you are old enough to remember September 11th, 2001, you will remember where you were, what you were doing, who you were with, etc, etc. I had just started 1st grade. I remember watching teachers crying, not understanding why, but knowing something bad had happened. I remember being brought into the library to watch the coverage. I remember being taken out of school early. I remember how unbelievably nice it was outside. It being such a nice day out was the least fitting thing that could have possibly happened. Its such a weird thing to remember but it has stuck with me for the past 13 years. So many memories and yet the one memory I hold onto the most isnt even my own. 10 days after 9/11, the first professional sporting event since the attacks was held in New York when the New York Mets hosted the Atlanta Braves. The City and the rest of the tri-state area was still reeling from the attacks. People were still missing, families were still mourning, the wounds were still fresh. People needed a distraction, and many turned to sports for comfort. September 21st, 2001 may have been just another regular season game on the schedule, but for the players, coaches, managers, and fans, it was more than a game. It was medicine. It was therapy. It was comfort. Mike Piazzas go ahead home run in the bottom of the 8th inning helped people, if just for a minute, forget what had happened. For that brief moment, people were happy. For many, it was the first time they had felt joy in over a week. I may not remember watching this game, but every year I watch this video to remind myself that no matter what terrible things happen in the world, it will always get better. It reminds me why I love sports, it reminds me why I love America, and it reminds me why I will #NeverForget youtu.be/0A3hmASpDqg
