14 years ago we were young, adventurous and courageous. We feared not. On Jan 4, 2001 we set out to spend the next 10 months of our lives sleeping on cots in basements, eating government rationed mac n cheese from a can and travelling the country in 15 passenger vans in an effort to help people. Oh yeah, we wanted to help people. Who knew as we landed in Denver our year ahead would bring us to inner cities to tutor mexican immigrant school children, to pine ridge indian reservation- one of the most impoverished communities in our country, to nebraska and montana to build homes (or in my case, just the front steps), to the aftermath of a tropical storm in texas and lastly to NYC in the days following 9/11. Today I am honored, proud and ever so grateful for all of the people big and small I met along the way for they have shaped my path in life. There will be many things we forget in our years to come but this will not be one of them. Those were the days... Happy Anniversary AmeriCorps Class VII! So tell me AmeriCorps peeps, what is something you will never forget?
