Even if he doesnt change his mind, sending him an angry email is kind of cathartic... Dear Brian, Sorry this email is quite long but I would appreciate it if you took the time to read it. I am very sick today and cant attend the lecture. Your refusal to record the Political Economy lectures is thus making it very hard for me to study. Yes, I can borrow notes from a friend and look at the lecture slides. But I hope you can see how frustrating it is to be denied lecture recordings for no other reason than your personal belief that the cohort will perform better without them. Maybe this is true for subjects with 1 hour lectures at 8:30 in the morning. But after two weeks of Political Economy, I can tell you this: by 3:15pm, a lot of students have been at uni for hours and find it hard to concentrate, especially for a 2 hour lecture and especially in that awful lecture theatre (stuffy, crowded, and honestly an OH&S nightmare). I know a guy who had to choose between paid work and attending these lectures - luckily hes not renting and he can afford to attend the lecture. You are making life harder for students suffering any illnesses from a head cold to depression to chronic fatigue. I imagine anyone with a disability (especially involving mobility) would benefit from being able to study from home. It is so condescending for you to pretend to know our lives and our study habits, and to make this decision for us. At the very least, students need to be aware that you refuse to record lectures before we enrol in the subject. It would save students wasting time on withdrawing from the subject and finding another one that fits their needs. Maybe consider putting it in the subject description or the timetable. You are deliberately making this subject less accessible and I hope you will reconsider over the course of the semester.
