14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME O Lord, You are my inheritance Man is endowed with intellect and free-will which makes him/her a moral agent. Man becomes a moral agent precisely because of his capacity to choose and make decisions, choices that can be either good or bad, right or wrong. In this time and age, indecisiveness has become the worst sin of all. The lack of courage to decide upon the good principles and legislations to govern our lives, the lack of fortitude to confront our challenging present. It is based on this that, Christ invites us this fourteenth Sunday in ordinary time to re-think again of our commitment, our choices, our principles (laws upon which we live and have our being). Jesus is always sincere with us proclaiming the Truth as it is in itself and not as we would want it. He tells us the Truth about the cost of discipleship, reminding us that it is not easy to follow Him but one must resolve to do so with courage and fortitude, be committed to the course ahead. “Everybody can praise and glorify the Lord, but it is only a man full of courage and fortitude that can follow Christ”. Christ does not deceive us but he bluntly proclaims the God-spelled Truth to us for our own internal therapy and resolution. Our lives like for those of the Gospel today, is always a dilemma, an antagonism between the call of God and the demands of our relations. The fundamental question that we ought to ask ourselves today is, what comes first between the call of Christ and other demands of life? Can I fulfill the demands of life while committing myself to the divine call? “Seek first the Kingdom of Thee and the rest will be given unto you”. Responding to the divine calling is the principle of our Christian life, that is, the law upon which we ought to live as Christians. Christ defines our lives, and in doing so gives it meaning and purpose. Hence, everything we do, in as far we are doing in Christ will necessary have meaning and purpose. Today we gather here, precisely to re-discover this meaning and purpose in our lives. Does Christ have a place in my life? Where is the position of Christ in my life? Am I committed to my divine calling? What do we do in situations, where it is not easy to live as a Christian: like being faithful, honest and just, giving or receiving a bribe? As moral being all our decisions are founded upon Christ, He can give us the fortitude to do what is right and pleasing. Christ is always patient and waiting for us to make right decisions. Let us pray today, that we may always carry the mission of Christ our Lord in all Stratus of our life. “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Rom: 8:28). A blessed and Joy-filled Sunday to you all! Rev. Fr. Augustine, OSA.
