15.12.2014, 9 p.m. Just returned to Delhi after a hectic day at A.M.U. along with my elder brother Co. Valmiki Katju, and my friends Asif Azmi, and Adil Shahnawaz ( grandson of General Shahnawaz of the I.N.A. ).. We stayed at the University Guest House no. 3. Last night when we reached the AMU Guest House, the VC personally came there to meet us. He was very happy to meet my brother, his former instructor in 1967 in the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun. They were meeting after 47 years, and exchanged old memories. I also met the pro- VC, Brig. Ali Ahmed. Prof. Asadullah Khan of the biotechnology Department had been deputed by the VC to look after us. I told him that his name was the same name as of Mirza Ghalib, the greatest Urdu poet, and a favourite of mine. We had an excellent dinner at the VCs house, in which Mrs. Shah was the gracious hostess. This morning I walked down to Maulana Azad library, about which there was so much fuss recently and spent some time there. The library staff recognized me, and were very kind to me, offering tea, etc. At 9.30 I met the AMU student union leaders. I was told that there is an old custom which is still being followed that the student leaders cannot drive their vehicles during their term, and have to wesr achkan. The President of the students union had come on a car driven by someone, and the Secretary on a scooter driven by someone. At about 10 a.m.I went to the Law Department and spoke on Constitutional Jurisprudence ( my speech is on my blog justicekatju.blogspot.in ),and then there was a short interaction with the students. At 11 a.m. I attended the inaugural function of the North Zone Vice Chancellors Conference as the chief guest. In my speech I said that the Universities in India should do research and find out solutions to the real problems of poverty, malnutrition, unemployment healthcare, water shortage etc facing the nation. This was followed by lunch at the VCs residence. At 4 p.m. I went to the Womens College and spoke on Womens Emancipation . It was followed by a question and answer session. We returned to Delhi totally exhausted, after a hectic day.
