15 May 1986: Herbert McConville, 61-year-old Protestant civilian, married with 1 child and a delivery driver was a former member of the UDR. Mr McConville was making his regular weekly meat delivery to a cafe in Kilmorey Street, Newry when he was shot by the IRA. At 10:30AM he returned to his vehicle when a pillion passenger on a motorcycle opened fire. Mr McConville was a former member of the UDR holding the rank of Sergeant and was hit with 15 low velocity bullets when the town was packed with shoppers. A woman said: I was speaking to him just before he left the cafe and then the shots rang out. I looked across the road to see him lying beside his van. Mr McConville was from Spelga Drive, Rathfriland and served in the armed forces during World War 2 and in 1981, he left the UDR. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Daisy Hill Hospital.
