(15 Years Ago) October, 1998. Wednesday. 11:14 AM I woke up early and finished marking Coen Brotherss film essays before heading to campus. I only made it a hundred yards before my 74 Plymouth Valiant died. Sandy was home so I jumped in her 84 Nissan Sentra that was written off a couple of years ago after hitting a deer in a snowstorm on our way up north for Christmas. Halfway down the block the gas pedal got stuck and I was up to 80 before I kicked it loose. Theres no question that the second problem was a result of the first. I have the ability to: stop engines, destroy stereos and televisions, erase hard drives, and immobilize any electronic device just by walking in the room. Once I get charged up, like after my Valiant stalled, the current seeks an outlet. My record is a VCR, toaster oven, and portable tape recorder. They all malfunctioned after I had erased an important writing file on the computer. Sometimes the current can be harnessed as when I worked as a diviner at an oilfield site in northern Alberta. I walked around the location in Red Earth with a pair of coat hangers and located buried pipes from a previous compressor station. The coat hangers would cross, sometimes violently, whenever I stood over the buried metal. The construction foreman said I was the best he had ever seen. I was happy to put that experience on my resume but I havent had an offer since then.
