150 DAYS BEFORE 2014 CHAN! Today marks the 150 Day to the kick-off of the 3 rd Edition of the Orange African Nations Championship (CHAN) SOUTH AFRICA 2014. This African football spectacle, scheduled to take place from 11 January to 1 February 2014, is set to be yet another ground-breaking tournament that South Africans and the Continent can experience as an event to kick-start the year 2014. Gabon beat Cameroon to join the 13 teams who have now booked their place to this tournament and the 3 host cities; Cape Town, Mangaung and Polokwane are now gearing up to receive Africa’s home champions when they land on this country’s shores. On the important milestone, the Local Organising Committee is urging all citizens of the country and the African diaspora to go out in numbers to support this tournament and be part of the celebration of Africa’s Home Champions. The CEO of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Mvuzo Mbebe, emphasized the importance of this milestone date and highlighted the fact that as each day goes by the tournament date gets closer and closer and therefore nothing can be left to chance. To this effect, Mr. Mbebe said: “The Local Organising Committee has already set up all of its operational structures including appointing Heads of Provincial Operations at the 3 host cities who will ensure that the tournament leaves up to expectations. The host cities have a corresponding project office that is now fully aligned with our structures and our work has begun. All the business and operational plans have now been finalized and we have begun with the execution and implementation of the plans and, as a matter of fact.” Mr. Mbebe further as sured South Africans that the standard of this competition will not be lowered and that the successful hosting of the AFCON 2013 which broke records of ticket sales would be used as a benchmark for executing another great tournament. “We are quite certain that with CHAN 2014, we will deliver yet another seamless and high quality event that South Africans are accustomed to. This rainbow nation is recognised worldwide as the destination for hosting World Class sporting events and with CHAN; we plan on maintaining this positive image of our beautiful country. We are a football loving nation and this is a tournament that will bring the best of African football talent”. said Mbebe Twelve (12) countries have so far qualified; Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Uganda and South Africa (as host). There are still 3 more team to qualify: 1 teams from the Central Zone (Cameroon, DR Congo) and 2 teams from the Southern Zone (Angola, Botswana, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe which will be finalised by 1 September 2013 Mr. Mbebe highlighted the importance of this tournament as reservoir and a source for ‘Africa’s Home Champions’ and the fact that local leagues plays a crucial role in the keeping African football alive at home, thus the significance of the African Nations Championship, otherwise known as the Orange CHAN 2014. CAF will conduct the official draw of the 16 teams on 1 6 September in Cairo, and the Orange African Nations Championship SOUTH AFRICA 2014 takes place from 11 January till 1 February 2013 in Cape Town, Mangaung and Polokwane.
