150 Voices for 150 Years: An Autobiography of Us The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was about to happen 150 years ago, in approximately 25 days. Todays entry returns us to Mrs. Bellinger, the eligible widow who had refugeed from Marietta. The gentleman who wrote this letter was another perspective suitor and his concern probably had a secondary agenda. Regardless, his letter gives us a good idea of the destruction to come as the armies get closer to the city. Mrs. E. E. Bellinger, I write you a few lines not knowing whether you will ever read it or not, as I do not know where you are. As you stated in your last letter, you thought you might go to Hancock County. I sent you this note, and if you receive it, please let me know of your whereabouts. I sent a note early on the 18th, but I did not think you would be able to receive it if the Yankees were as close to Bartow as they have been reported to be. I have just returned from Cobb, and I am very sorry to have to inform you that your house was burned and nearly all you left in it was destroyed. I saw your negro woman you left at your house, and she stated that the Yankees turned out the drawers when they first came and occupied the house until they left and burned it. She was not able to save hardly anything. The Yankees also burned all the houses between Mrs. Gatts and Mrs. Pops on that side of the street as well as all the business part of town except the Cole Hotel and the Post Office block. I cannot give you but a small idea of how the place looks, and I will not undertake to describe it further. My house was not one of the burned, nor my farm. Only the fences were torn down and my corn was taken. Everything else that would do to eat was taken as well. I expect to move back there between now and spring. If this should reach you please let me hear from you as soon as possible, for I do not know what I should write having not received any letter since I last wrote you. Yours respectfully, J. B.
