150 YEARS AGO TODAY July 4th, 1863: The other turning point of the Civil War (Gettysburg July 2nd being the other) was the the surrender of Vicksburg by the Confederate Lt. General John C. Pemberton (Pennsylvanian). He surrendered on July the 4th thinking that he and his troops might gain more favorable terms from U.S.(known as - "Unconditional Surrender") Grant. Capping a brilliant campaign Grant, and unlike any other northern General at that time, cut his supply lines with the north in order to move south freely, then came north through Mississippi fighting several battles and surround Vicksburg. The campaign for Vicksburg ran from April the 29th, 1863 until the surrender on July the 4th, 1863. In my estimation the surrender of Vicksburg was one of the greatest triumphs of the Civil War! Pemberton surrendered over 15,000 troops. That capture along with the surrender days later of Port Hudson, LA freed the most important waterway in America to northern trade. Lincoln later declared "The Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea". Please consider this 4th of July history lesson! :-) civilwar.org/battlefields/vicksburg-campaign/#Vicksburg_Resources
