150 years ago today, Confederate secession died as the Army of Northern Virginia retreated from Gettysburg. They lost 23,000 men. The Grand Army of the Republic lost as many, but the south had no way to replace such losses. With the ground still thick with dead and adefeated Southern Army, General Robert E. Lee prepared to retreat. In the early morning hours of July 4, Confederate General John Imboden led a hospital train filled with wounded that was reported to be 17 miles long; Imboden would say to Lee,"General, this has been a hard day on you," and Lee would reply mournfully, "Yes, it has been a sad, sad day to us." This is the price being one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. intecteacher.instech.knoxschools.org/modules/groups/homepagefiles/gwp/443924/714578/Image/Battle_of_Gettysburg__Confederate_retreat__medium.jpg
