15kg tumour removed from womans stomach __________________________________ CHENNAI: Latha*, 52, had been suffering from breathlessness and fatigue for several years, but not in her wildest of dreams did she imagine the cause of her ailments would be a 15.6 kg tumour. A team of surgeons at a city hospital recently removed the uterine tumour, five times the size of a healthy baby, after a rare abdominal procedure. One month ago, Latha arrived at Kumaran Hospitals in Kilpauk with profuse bleeding and was severely anemic. Tests revealed a large fibroid attached to the outer surface of the uterus was pressing down and causing the bleeding. She could not sit or lie down as the tumour pressed down on her lungs and caused breathlessness. We were shocked at the scan reports because the fibroid was huge. In medical parlance, this is called a super giant uterine fibroid and the largest one removed before was in Africa and weighed 9.6 kg, said Dr Manimekalai, HoD of obstetrics and gynecology who performed the surgery. The symptoms are based on the location of the fibroid and since this one was outside the uterus, the patient was unaware of its presence. The tumour could have been inside her abdomen for more than 20 years, said the doctor. The patient was taken for surgery within two days of her arrival and four doctors removed the tumour, nearly the size of two footballs. The surgery which lasted three-and-a-half hours was challenging as the tumour, which takes blood supply to grow, had a lot of blood vessels attached to it. It was also stuck to the small bowel and omentum and pressing on the uterus. We had to carefully slice through and detach it, said surgical gastroenterologist Dr P Shivakumar. The doctors removed the uterus along with the fibroid, which was 21 inches in diameter, to prevent it from relapsing. The patient has recovered after the surgery. Nearly 25% of women in the reproductive group are susceptible to such fibroids and they usually come in multiples. Single fibroids tend to grow big. High amounts of oestrogen can cause these tumours and they are benign, Dr Manimekalai said. Note :: the surgery is performed today
