16 Days of Activism: Day 13/16 Survival techniques to those who are in an abusive relationship. Planning ahead for an emergency: 1) Pack a set of clothes for yourself and your children. Store the suitcase at the home of a friend, of a neighbor or hide it in your house where you can get to it easily. 2) Have an extra set of keys to the house and car and keep them hidden in your suitcase. 3) Collect and save evidence such as names and addresses of witnesses, pictures of your injuries and police and medical reports. Document dates of abuse for possible legal action. 4) Take extra cash, savings and cheque books and any other personal valuables with you. This will help you provide food and shelter for yourself and your children. 5) Pack a favourite book or toy for the children. 6)Take with you legal documents (interdict, etc.) and important papers such as identification, birth certificates, medical cards, drivers license, marriage certificate, documentation of car ownership. Keep these together where you can get to them easily and quickly. You may need these documents for a number of reasons. Keep them in a safe place outside your home such as your workplace, parents home, etc. 7) Most important plan ahead, call the advice desk for abused woman.
