16 JULY 1961 BOYS TRAPPED ON REEF RESCUED BY CANOEISTS Three boys who were trapped in a stranded motor boat on a reef off Ardrossan were rescued today by canoeists. The boys, James Hendry, (10), his brother Robert, (8), and Raymond Timmins, (12), of 20 Busbie Drive, Ardrossan, had been gathering whelks at low tide. They boarded a motor boat which had been washed ashore in a recent gale and failed to see that the incoming tide had cut them off. When they discovered they were unable to leave the boat they shouted and waved to attract attention. They were seen by a resident of a nearby house who notified the police. The rocks on the reef made it impossible to bring a motor boat close enough to rescue the boys. The police contacted members of Ardrossan Canoe Club and brothers, David, (18), and William Shanks, (16), 11 Montgomerie Street, and Charles Hendry, (16), 93 Eglinton Road, went out and brought the boys to safety.
