16 children killed as train hits school bus Sanjay Kumar, Indian Area Police Chief, said that 16 children and a driver were killed and many others injured when a train hit a school bus in Medak district of Telangana State in southern India. The bus was carrying 35 children and a driver. He said on Thursday in New Delhi that 12 children and the driver died at the scene while four children died at hospitals and 23 were admitted to hospital. Kumar said the dead children were between the ages of 6 and 16 years. “Some children were seriously injured and the death toll could increase,” he said. Kumar said the train rammed into the bus dragging it for several hundred metres over the track, while schoolbags and water bottles lay scattered by the wrecked bus at the site. He said police believe the bus driver tried to cross the track din spite of warnings of the advancing train, adding that local authorities had ordered a probe into the accident. Scores of people are killed in accidents at unmanned railway crossings in India every year. India’s railways carry an estimated 20 million passengers daily. Authorities say more than 15,000 people have died in railway-related accidents in the past two years.
