16 years ago I lived in Tanzania East Africa with my youngest sister Bonni Tamati My dad Vic Tamati and my mum Losa Tamati Our parents were head hunted by the volunteer service of New Zealand VSA (Volunteer Service Abroad) to help run a residential centre for street children in the village Maji ya Chai, and a inner city drop-in centre for street children in the city of Arusha, due to the amazing work they had been doing with street kids and youth in Chch. Back then I was only a moi pi teenager, but it was there with my Digable planets cassingle given to me by cousin, TasnDrew Mafoe , along with some Dolly Parton, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Celine Dion, Radiohead, Michael Bolton, Aaliyah, Dangelo some 90s classic alt rock sent to me by my bestfriend Nikki Milligan I slowly started to discover something different in music, I felt an empathy in music that I still crave to this day, something that resonated with me at that time being so far away from home. My dad taught me how to play hotel california on the guitar, and with letters from friends Lesina Petelo and a poem by my sister K.A. Tamati Tamati I was inspired to write my first song on guitar which I played to my sister and parents at my first performance, in my parents bedroom in Makumira,Tanzania. We all cried so hard afterward because we were all so very homesick! It is with absolute joy and incredible gratitude from deep in my heart that I am able to fulfil a life long dream tomorrow afternoon. I have been granted a wish by Redbull to take my partner and son back to all the places that helped plant the seed in this little girls life that grew to become an enduring love for writing, performing and making music. To say I am excited is a huge understatement, I am beyond that!! I am a blessed and fortunate woman to have this once in a lifetime opportunity, and I feel so very thankful! We will joined by my cousin Oscar Kightley and his crew who will be documenting this experience, so we can show you all what happens over there. I am unsure of how I will feel, or what will happen, but I am so completely open to the experience, I feel filled with love. Sending that love right back out to all of you, Ladi xo
