16 years ago today was the start of a 3-day firefight where CPL Day, James actions earned him the Medal of Honor. During the prolonged firefight CPL Day lost over half of his men. Despite being extremely outnumbered CPL Day shouted words of encouragement, and directed deadly fire in order to repel the enemy. CPL Day escorted multiple wounded Marines to safety through heavy enemy fire. CPL Day stood his ground for the entirety of the 3-day event having yielded no ground in an extremely exposed position.
