16th of December I planned to share a few thoughts about 16th of December when 43 years ago East Pakistan became a new country and two nations theory left in tatters. When I woke up this morning, another tragedy was waiting. Up till now 126 Children have been declared dead in a terrorist Attack on Army Public School Peshawar, and a furious battle is going on with terrorists cornered into one block of the school. Though the events are unfolding and it will take sometime before things become clear but following rituals will be performed individually and at national level without any doubt. • Our 24 hour media will continuously show the dramatic scenes of the personal tragedies of the families by focusing on them in this period of intense grief. • Political and Civic leaders of all persuasions will condemn the barbaric attack but a large number will stop short of condemning the attackers unconditionally. • Central and Provincial governments will announce a financial Package of around Rs 500000 for families of children who died in this attack and around Rs 200000 for injured children. • Federal and Provincial law enforcement Institutions will blame each other for failure of security • If they are lucky, a commission will be formed to investigate the cause of this attack (The report of which will never be published) • Within 48 hours our brave nation and media will move on to new challenges and life of misery will continue In the background of today’s events, original thought about the biggest national tragedy has disappeared in the fog and even I try to think, can’t think any more.
