17:04 Feb 03 NT Severe Weather Warning: Locally Damaging Winds & Heavy Rainfall. Parts of Darwin-Daly and Victoria River Districts. Details: Early Warning Network: ewn.au NT Severe Weather Warning: Locally Damaging Winds & Heavy Rainfall for Locally Damaging Winds, Heavy Rainfall, Abnormally High Tides and Large Waves for people in all Northern Territory coastal areas, southern Darwin-Daly and northern Victoria River Districts. Issued at 5:00 pm CST Monday 3 February 2014 Synoptic Situation: An active monsoon trough is located over the Top End with a vigorous monsoon flow to its north. A tropical low 995 hPa was located about 80 kilometres northwest of Timber Creek and 120 km south southeast of Wadeye at 3:30 pm and moving southeast at 10 km/h. This low is expected to continue moving steadily across the Northern Territory, passing south of Katherine during Tuesday. Locally damaging wind gusts to 90 km/h are possible with thunderstorms over the southern Darwin-Daly District tonight as the low moves inland. Damaging winds with monsoon squalls are no longer expected along the coasts, including Wadeye, Darwin, the Tiwi Islands and Nhulunbuy. Heavy rain associated with the low is expected to extend inland over the southern Darwin-Daly and northern Victoria River Districts overnight, including Wadeye and Timber Creek. These falls may lead to flash flooding. High astronomical tides combined with strong onshore winds are likely to cause the sea level to rise above the highest tidal level of the year across Northern Territory coastal areas on this evenings high tide. Large waves may also cause coastal erosion. As astronomical tides decrease throughout the week, tides are unlikely to exceed the highest tidal level of the year after today. The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when conditions deteriorate. Driving conditions may be hazardous - avoid flooded roads and watercourses. Abnormally high tides could cause minor flooding at the coast.
