17-07-2014 Gospel of the Day Matthew 11 28. Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. 29. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light. Commentary on the Gospel The REST PROMISED The Master Jesus set out to break a certain religious scheme of his era, in which people lived overwhelmed to meet a huge amount of detailed religious requirements, not taking time for essential things. Of course, who penava, carrying heavy burdens, was the simple people, while the Pharisees and scribes adapted the legal requirements of their facilities. The easy yoke and light burden announced by Jesus did not consist in the simple abolition of religious requirements, but in its replacement by another action agenda: follow the Master in the way of the compassionate and merciful love of neighbor. Nothing of concern about secondary things, or neuroticism to fulfill, in every detail, things prescribed. The release of all of this happen, when seeking to live the merciful love as a fundamental requirement in the process of communion with God. Therefore, there is a profound difference between the disciples of the teachers of the Law and the disciples of Jesus. The first penam under the heavy burden of the demands of the Law The second they experience the peace and rest, only to submit to the law of love. The former are guided by arrogant and boastful spirit. The second experience meekness and humility of Jesus. Come unto me is the call of Jesus who is enslaved by religion. prayer Spirit of peace and rest, frees me from the heavy yoke of legalism, and make me embrace the yoke soft and light, which leads me to be merciful to my neighbor. Psalms 102 1. [Prayer of someone afflicted, who in misfortune pours out sorrows before Yahweh] Yahweh, hear my prayer, let my cry for help reach you. 2. Do not turn away your face from me when I am in trouble; bend down and listen to me, when I call, be quick to answer me! 3. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burning like an oven; 4. like grass struck by blight, my heart is withering, I forget to eat my meals. 5. From the effort of voicing my groans my bones stick out through my skin. 6. I am like a desert-owl in the wastes, a screech-owl among ruins, 7. I keep vigil and moan like a lone bird on a roof. 8. All day long my enemies taunt me, those who once praised me now use me as a curse. 9. Ashes are the food that I eat, my drink is mingled with tears, 10. because of your fury and anger, since you have raised me up only to cast me away; 11. my days are like a fading shadow, I am withering up like grass. 12. But you, Yahweh, are enthroned for ever, each generation in turn remembers you. 13. Rise up, take pity on Zion! the time has come to have mercy on her, the moment has come; 14. for your servants love her very stones, are moved to pity by her dust. 15. Then will the nations revere the name of Yahweh, and all the kings of the earth your glory; 16. when Yahweh builds Zion anew, he will be seen in his glory; 17. he will turn to hear the prayer of the destitute, and will not treat their prayer with scorn. 18. This shall be put on record for a future generation, and a people yet to be born shall praise God: 19. Yahweh has leaned down from the heights of his sanctuary, has looked down from heaven to earth, 20. to listen to the sighing of the captive, and set free those condemned to death, 21. to proclaim the name of Yahweh in Zion, his praise in Jerusalem; 22. nations will gather together, and kingdoms to worship Yahweh. 23. In my journeying my strength has failed on the way; 24. let me know the short time I have left. Do not take me away before half my days are done, for your years run on from age to age. 25. Long ago you laid earths foundations, the heavens are the work of your hands. 26. They pass away but you remain; they all wear out like a garment, like outworn clothes you change them; 27. but you never alter, and your years never end. 28. The children of those who serve you will dwell secure, and their descendants live on in your presence. Isaiah 26 7. The path of the Upright One is honesty; you smooth the honest way of the upright. 8. Following the path of your judgements, Yahweh, we set our hopes in you, your name, your memory are all our soul desires. 9. At night my soul longs for you and my spirit within me seeks you out; for when your judgements appear on earth the inhabitants of the world learn what saving justice is. 12. Yahweh, you will grant us peace, having completed all our undertakings for us. 16. Yahweh, in distress they had recourse to you, they expended themselves in prayer, since your punishment was on them. 17. As a pregnant woman near her time of delivery writhes and cries out in her pangs, so have we been, Yahweh, in your eyes: 18. we have been pregnant, we have writhed, but we have given birth only to wind: we have not given salvation to the earth, no inhabitants for the world have been brought to birth. 19. Your dead will come back to life, your corpses will rise again. Wake up and sing, you dwellers in the dust, for your dew will be a radiant dew, but the earth will give birth to the shades.
