17 April 1972: Patrick Joseph Magee, 20-year-old Catholic civilian, single and a student teacher was from Downpatrick. Mr. Magee was shot in the lower Falls area by the army. He and another student teacher were leaving St. Comgalls School where Mr. Magee was on teaching placement. Both men were shot by soldiers of the Parachute Regiment. Both men lay down flat on the school steps when the soldiers opened fire. Mr. Magee was unable to reach cover and was lying on the bottom step and received a deep chest wound. The inquest was told by Mr. Magees friend that they were going for lunch and that after the shooting the soldiers took his picture and took him to an army base. He said the soldiers told him he was lucky and should have been killed. Rioting had been taking place earlier in the day but it wasnt known if Mr. Magee was shot while rioting was going on. It was reported in Civil Right a journal of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association that Mr. Magee had been in clear view when he was shot and obviously unarmed. He was an active member of NICRA in the Downpatrick area. LEST WE FORGET!
