17 October 1346, Sir Robert de Keith, great marischal of Scotland, - TopicsExpress

17 October 1346, Sir Robert de Keith, great marischal of Scotland, is killed at the Battle of Nevilles Cross. He had a son, John, who dying before him, left a son Robert. Robert is usually said to have succeeded his grandfather as marischal upon the death of the latter at the Battle of Dupplin Moor, on 12 Aug 1332 according to Boece. However the contemporary historians do not mention the marischals death at Dupplin. At the taking of Perth, which occurred later, his grandson is not styled sir nor marsichal. Keith survived the battle, and was one of those who immediately afterwards provided for the safety of David II by taking to Dumbarton, and then to France. Robert de Keith, marischal, is mentioned as forming a member of Davids court at the Chateau Gaillard in Normandy. After his return to Scotland with the king he fell at the battle of Nevilles Cross in 1346.
