17 Senior Biology students from Otago Boys spent a day in the Biochemistry Department of the University of Otago on Saturday. Dr Andrew Cridge and postgraduate students Amy and Henry hosted us for a full day of Metagenomic Study analysing soils collected from the Carisbrook try line and halfway line. We were linked to Massey, Albany, Auckland and Waikato University labs, working nationally with other secondary school students. DNA extraction, PCR and Gel Electrophoresis techniques were used to determine the bacterial species present in soils throughout NZ. Results from Hot Water Beach were also analysed and a brief break to look at Peter Deardens bees and cancer and heart disease research labs were a highlight of the day. A HUGE thank you to Assoc Professor Peter Dearden, Director of Genetics Otago, Dr Andrew Cridge, the Brian and Kay McMath Charitable Trust, the Chenery Memorial Trust and the Biochemistry University staff for hosting us for the day!
