18 Jan 15: (Foresthills CA to Lake Tahoe, NV to Bishop CA) Well today is the first day of the official trip and we left at 0800 hrs at first with 3 bikes, then up to 8 bikes and then finally we had most of our riders at 10 bikes and a car………………off we go. Temps today ranged from 3 to 20 with it close to 20 when we arrived in the valley town of Bishop. So our ride took us to Lake Tahoe where I was informed that normally this time of year there would be 12 feet of snow on the ground………….well nothing, nadda or not a single inch. Well we could see that sometime over the past several weeks there had been snow, but most has melted and just a little bit on and off throughout the area. We passed all the snow marker sticks which measured close to 20 ft high, and no snow to be seen. But first it was over the Donner Pass which is close to 8000 ft above sea level. While up there it was coolish and it was cool to see even higher the wooden covered train tracks which are very high, old and cool to see. Down at Lake Tahoe we drove thru a couple of neighbourhoods with multi-million dollar homes and just past the home which was used in the Bonanza TV series. We left, crisscrossed CA and NZ and stopped at Topaz Lake Lodge for Lunch, where the temp went to 20. Now this is where I make our Southern Cousins shake their heads. You see it got rid of my liner and coat and rode the rest of the way with only a long-sleeve shirt and my BK Vest. So now it is off to Mono Lake/Basin. You will note in the pics it looks white, well it is salt and the lake is quite salt because LA has been using it as drinking water since the 70’s, and moving water close to 400 miles to LA. They have almost ruined the lake and action is being taken to save it. We road thru the mountains and all kinds of beautiful rugged landscapes which I really can’t describe to you…..but let’s say breathtaking. Around 4pm we arrived in Bishop were we checked into our hotel, and my friends took the time to wash their bikes……………me I hit the hot-tub. Such is life and I enjoyed it more than washing my bike. Off to supper at a real Mexican eatery named El Ranchilo and was so nice and my friends enjoyed the meal. So on the way back to the hotel I noted that they were very kind and friendly, such a wonderful group of people, it is hard to have fun with them………………but Have a look at some of the last photos where you will see they have all put their bikes to bed, covered them with their blanket covers so they can have a great night sleep. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…………………shushhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, do not wake the bikes. Tomorrow is more riding and it appears they have some special things for me to see and experience. Oh yes…………….yippee Sea Hawks.
