1880 - January 9, The Democrat-Star .....G. M. Dees is now paying 171/2 cents each for CROSSTIES at the stump. As he is desirous of employing 300 men, this is a good opportunity for all MEN WHO MAKE THEIR LIVING BY THE AXE. Pay every Saturday in GOLD and SILVER. NOTE: Crossties were being shipped every week by the THOUSANDS, to Europe, South America, and the West Indies. .....The Board of Supervisors in session this week rescinded the contract awarded to PRESTON B. JOHNSON last November for the building of bridges on the sloughs and streams on the road leading through Pascagoula River Swamp from CUMBEST BLUFF to the residence of E. ROBERTS. .....We are indebted to Mr. ALEX GALLOWAY, of this county for a sample package of his SUGAR CROP this year. It is useless for us to say anything of the quality of the sugar, for everyone knows that Mr. GALLOWAY is the boss of this county in making sugar and molasses. (He lived where the White Farm is on Ramie Farm Road.) Yellow Fever scare in 1880 .....Some of our croakers are alreay predicting another yellow fever epidemic next summer. .....Last Sunday a part of the community at the Seashore were somewhat startled at the report that a sailor had died of yellow fever on board a vessel in the bay, and our quarantine physician was ordered out with sulphur pot, etc., to annihilate the germ. Upon investigation it was found that the report was totally unfounded, so far as the nature of the disease was concerned. The man died of a congestive chill.
