1886 Jupiter Lifesaving Station, one of only two built in Florida. Well, they had to rebuild Santa Rosa after the other 1906 hurricane. Here is some text from one of the letters I have from the era. Champ Spencer took over as 7th District Superintendant 1882 when William Hunt passed away. He is also watching the building of the second set of houses of refuge, making ten altogether. Indian River inlet HOR was built same time as this Station. O F F I C E O F Superintendent of Life -Saving Stations, S E V E N T H D I S T R I C T , Port Orange, Fla., April 27th ,1885 Hon. Sumner I. Kimball General Superintendent Life Saving Service, Sir, Although the construction of new stations is outside the orbit of my supervisory duties, I must solicit your special attention to the fact that in the specifications for the life-saving- station at Jupiter, no adequate provisions made for supply of water, for ventilation & for protection against insects in connection with ventilation, nor for the necessity of house-shade through verandas around the building. These are prime essentials without which the organization of an efficient service on the East Coast of Florida impossible. Keeper & Surfmen must have a comfortable shelter against the heat & insects peculiar to the country if you expect them to endure the same when on duty. The chimneys of every House of Refuge smoke on the inside instead of outside on occasion of particular winds, It is to be hoped, this evil has been guarded against in the new stations. I have never had the specifications of Jupiter Inlet or Morris Island stations sent to me and whatever information I possess regarding them is derived from a casual glance at those in the hands of Superintendent Wandell and of the sub-contractor at Jupiter station. Materials & workmanship at Jupiter Inlet station impressed me as excellent although of course, it not being my province, I did not inspect with a view to an accurate judgement in this particular Very respectfully C.H.
