19/3/2014 OPEN LETTER TO THE UGANDAN MINISTER OF PRESIDENCY: Dear Sir, Being trusted with the running of two ministries means that you are a hard working cadre. You are currently serving as the minister of the presidency and at the same time the minister for Kampala City council Authority. Thus, permit me to first salute you and thank you for your great service to the country. On top of your good working skills, you are a good orator and debater. Your presence in government and the media is highly recognized as you are always articulate, concise, passionate and straight to the point. Recently, you announced that you and your team were drafting a bill to be presented to Parliament about national Patriotism. You stated that once the bill is fully approved as Law, It will require every Ugandan to love his country and therefore the Government. You added that all young men would undergo military training to ensure that they can be able to defend our country in case of anything. Well, that is a good proposal which needs to be supported. However, there is another side of the coin which should be analyzed: First of all, the Banyankole have a saying that, “EKA EKWENDA KUFA, NYINEKA NABUZA ABANA BE NGU NIMUMANYA KUMBA SHO WANYU” literally meaning that it is only in a home that is heading for extinction, that the head of the family reminds his children that he is the father. It is common knowledge that a father`s presence and influence is naturally felt in any home. Due to his tender care and leadership, his children love him and their home by default and so there is no need for begging them for their love. Instead, it is the children that always seek for favors from their old man. But in this case, we are seeing you the fathers (government) begging us the children (nationals) to love you. Is that in order? It means that there is a problem somewhere so fix it. You should understand that Love is an issue of the heart and that it can never be forced. It just flows by itself. Even if you pass the law, there is absolutely no way how you will implement it. Remember, you can take a horse to a river but you can`t force it to drink the water. Secondly, you should understand that friendship/ love is never asked for but CREATED. One of the ways of creating and winning someone`s heart is through giving. Once two people are in a relationship and they always walk an extra mile to provide for each other, then their relationship will surely grow. It is common Knowledge that all the common man wants from you is service. He or she looks forward to good water, education, housing, peace, roads, health centres and jobs. So instead of wasting your precious time and resources debating about love and passion, divert it to provision of services and wait for the results. Everyone will be dying for you and their nation! Lastly but certainly not the least, you must be aware that one of the pillars of love is TRUST. Once all parties fully trust each other, their relationship must grow. Nonetheless, once one person doesn’t trust his or her partner, there can never be any genuine love. I don’t know if you people in government carry out research but if you randomly seek for what the common man`s view is about the government and their country at large, chances are that the majority will tell you that their Government is full of corrupt people. In the modern world, corruption is a humble way of referring to ROBBERY. This means that your nationals look at you, their government as a clique of thieves serving your selfish needs. They believe that the national motto is now “FOR GOD AND MY STOMACH” instead of “FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY.” Therefore, if you are to build a strong relationship with them, you must return back to where you started from by eliminating thieving. Accountability should be emphasized right from the lowest to the highest office in the country. There should be zero tolerance to corruption and whoever is caught in the act should be dealt with accordingly for other officials to learn. You should also know that corruption cannot be fought by law only but by PARTRIOTISM. Thus, before you force us the nationals to love you, first teach your officials to be DISCPLINED. Don’t forget that Love is two way. If you love the country first, then it will also love you. First practice what you are preaching to us. For God and my country, Ruta.
