19 May 2014 In an effort to repeat last years fatal free Queens Birthday holiday weekend, Waikato Police and the Waipa District Council are urging motorists to ensure their driving will help them make it to Monday. Sergeant Warren Shaw of the Te Awamutu Road Policing Team said Friday 30 May would see the launch of a Trans-Tasman Make it to Monday road safety campaign being jointly run by Australian and New Zealand Police. To that end Police across the Waikato District and in fact, across the country, will be highly visible working to prevent deaths and injuries on our roads. Police will once again be exercising the highly successful 4km/h speed tolerance so anyone found travelling 5km/h over posted speed limits will face enforcement action and every driver stopped, regardless of the circumstances, can expect to be breath tested. Waipa District Council Road Safety Co-ordinator, Megan Jolly, said there are several things motorists can do to keep safe even before starting their journey. These include catching up on lost sleep before setting out and making sure vehicles are up to Warrant of Fitness standard. We want drivers and their vehicles to be fit for the road, Tyres are particularly important, as well as improving braking, properly inflated tyres can also save petrol. Mr Shaw said other key factors in keeping the road toll down were watching speed, driving to the conditions, keeping alert, not drinking and driving and wearing seatbelts front and back. For Police, new drivers adhering to the requirements of their graduated licences is particularly important as well given the greater than normal traffic volumes over holiday periods. Ms Jolly said to be fatal free again this long weekend would be fantastic however the Waikato also needs to drastically reduce the large number of serious injuries. Last year over this period there were 64 reported injury crashes in the Waikato and we must do our utmost to reduce the number she says. The majority of these crashes involved single vehicles where the driver lost control and ran off the road. Driver distraction/ inattention, loss of control and failing to give way were the main factors so we want you to share the safety message with your friends and whänau to keep safe on the roads this holiday weekend.
