19 years ago today I began my oilfield career by going to work on Doyon rig 15. My job was to bag up the gravel that was being drilled during the surface interval. Clinton was my opposite. I have come a long way since then. I am now a mud injun ear and I supervise those that utilize the drilling fluid to get that same gravel out of the hole. I am thankful for all the opportunities that have come my way to get me where I am today. I am thankful for Doyon Drilling for letting me use them as a stepping stone that lead me to employment with an international company with limitless possibilities. I am thankful for all the friends that I have made on the slope and I morn the loss of those that have passed at work or at home. I am thankful my children Kyle, Krysten, Kaylee, Katherine, Earl, Nova and Mila understand the need for me to leave for work so that I can support our family. I am thankful for the moments of solitude and contemplation while at work that cleared my mind of so many issues and troubled thoughts that once resolved, lead me to Charlotte, my best friend and my all. Although leaving my family is hard to do, I know it still needs to be done and I am sorry for that. I have missed multiples of birthdays and holidays due to work, but when I am home, everyday is a holiday and I savor every millisecond with you. My son Kyle is now working on his third year on the slope. I hope that his daughter Ryelynn will have the same understanding that he had for me when I left for work. I pray that he takes every opportunity to advance himself to whatever career he desires. Being a roughneck is a stepping stone, take those steps. Slope life is not for everyone, but I am thankful I have toughed it out so far and have been rewarded so well for my work.
